Fashion Problem: When a Pencil Skirt is Too-Form Fitting for Work

Dear Marion,

I need some fashion advice!
I have an awesome thrifted BR pencil skirt that I love. It's made out of stretchy material and really hugs/flatters my curves well. The thing is, I teach at a university and am a bit concerned that it might be a bit distracting.
Is there anyway I can make it work appropriate by diminishing its emphasis on my butt?  Thanks so much! :)

- Christina

I love this question!  Especially now days since it seems every piece of clothing I put on my lower half is MUCH tighter than normal (thank you baby bump).

ONE SIMPLE FIX for that curve-hugging pencil skirt:
Throw on a long cardigan!
The length should end just below your hips to be proportional.  I belted it here but you may prefer to leave it open.

I don't suggest buttoning the cardigan as it looks a little...well...too buttoned-up. :)

Pencil Skirt - H&M (Similar HERE and HERE)
Blouse - Nordstrom
Belt - F21
Cardigan - F21 (Similar HERE in a ton of colors)
Shoes - Tahari
Bracelet - J.Crew

Thank you Christina for such a great question!

So do you throw cardigans on over your curve-hugging skirts?
Know of any other tricks?

Thanks so much for reading!
XO - Marion

I would in my case throw on a parka. It hides the whole body!

Its actually what I am wearing today!

I always wear a longer, looser tunic to balance out the tightness of the skirt.

Great suggestion, cardigans with pencil skirts work so naturally anyway and this is a perfect way to cover up a little bit so it's not such a tight/form fitting look!

This is a great tip, because I have a couple of pencil skirts that fall into that "questionable" territory of snugness :) I'm going to try this idea for sure, thanks!

Great question and great idea! I actually also have a pencil skirt that was thrifed and fits me perfectly which means not exactly appropriate for work! I should layer a cardigan over it!

Great advice...love the way you're wearing this pencil skirt, the longer cardi belted over keeps your pretty figure and it's so slimming!

long cardi is the way to go for sure or possibly a long tunic, belted.

SUCH great advice! when i worked in a more "corporate" environment, long cardigans or long blazers were always my solution!

First, this ensemble is perfect for anything. Work. Groceries. Whatever.

Second, I think that a pencil skirt is such a "classic" piece that it is virtually impossible for it not to be appropriate in any setting.

BTW... congratulations for the baby bump!
