How to Wear Plaid at Work

What do you think of when you hear the word "plaid?"

Personally, I think of straw, flat-bed trucks and chew.  Not the sexiest collection of images.  But the Oregon girl in me has always loved plaid.

So can you wear plaid to the office?  Absolutely!  As long as you abide by a few basic rules, you should introduce this friendly fabric to your office (just leave your chew in the truck).

Rule 1: Dress it up!
Pair it with a classy pencil skirt or well-tailored trouser pants.  You need to balance the casual nature of plaid with something simple, classic and expensive-looking.

 And yes...I'm cold! ;-)

Rule 2: Do your Hair!
Stay away from hairstyles you would pair with plaid on the farm (ponytail, braiding, etc.)  Go more formal and unexpected with a high bun, a french twist or in waves!

Rule 3:  Shoes matter!
I prefer a neutral heel to help balance the busy pattern (use metallics as neutrals). I'm  always partial to high-heels, but Tory Burch Reva Flats would be a
beautiful option if you don't like a heel.

Rule 3: Accessorize!
Adding gold, silver or other pops of color will help blend the
plaid into a more cohesive look!

Pencil Skirt - H&M (Purchase HERE)
Plaid Top - H&M (available in-store)
Earrings - Anthropologie
Heels - Jessica Simpson
Belt - Nordstrom (Purchase HERE)
Clutch - H&M (Purchase HERE)
Ring - H&M (available in-store)

More plaid that could be easily dressed up for workwear:

I'm linking up today with my friend Mae from Lily & Mae...stop by her site to see how she rocked plaid!  I'm also linking with The Pleated Poppy and Rolled Up Pretty!

So would you wear plaid to your office?

Cute look! I have a structured plaid shirt I love wearing to work. As long as you keep everything else dressy, it can be totally doable.

Totally agree with what you said. As long as you dress it up a bit, plaid totally works for work.

Your outfit is really sleek.

The plaid paired with the pencil skirt is such a professional look! I also wear my plaid shirts to the office (although my office is pretty casual) underneath a belted sweater.

Great ideas! I'm not a huge fan of plaid on myself b/c I think I look frumpy, even if I dress it up. I do better with gingham, I think. LOL. Oh and I FINALLY figured out who you look like -- Eva Mendes. Gorgeous!
