Color Obsession: Gray & Yellow

"If you could only wear 2 colors right now, what would you wear?"

My answer is easy.  Gray and Yellow!!

It's like a cloudy sky with a punch of sunshine mixed in!  What is better than that?  I'm officially obsessed.

Here are a few of my favorite images capturing this gorgeous and clean color combo.

I could see this with gray skinny jeans, a simple white T, and gray pumps.

I adore this look!  Cori from La Vie Petite looks so chic in this color combo.  The slim yellow belt +  white watch + adorable print blouse + simple ladylike gray cardi
= PERFECTION
Ivory is a fabulous 3rd color to throw in the gray/yellow mix!  This look here is in-line with the MadMen trend (very Jackie O.!)

This look is very Victoria Beckham...Sexy without being over-the-top.

Straight from the Banana Republic Runway.  A great example how you can throw leopard print into the mix for a little pop!

Home Decor Inspiration:

I adore this wallpaper.

Looking for a quick way to lighten-up and glam-up your living space?  Simply add a pop of lemon and mirrors for an instant modern-chic feel.

Krysti from Blissful Meandering shows you how to make your own felt wreath.  I love the fullness of this chic gray + yellow one!

Beauty Tip Tuesday: 4 super easy ways to get out of the ponytail rut!

50% of you are wearing a ponytail as you read this sentence.
Well...this is not an official statistic.  I couldn't find research pertaining to ponytails.  But I am fairly certain that I am not alone in my devotion to this classic hairstyle!

That said, ponytails do have ONE huge flaw.  They can be so boring, yawns-ville, the wallflower of hairstyles.  Perhaps this is because they are SO easy and simple, it falls victim to monotony.  Well your hair deserves better!  And since I know you are ALL super busy women, I'll keep it simple.

Time to shake-up the routine with these 4 simple twists on the original:

1) Low & Sleek Pony:
This classic style always looks ladylike and pretty. Just lean back a little bit, gather the hair at the nape of your neck and fasten.  For an extra polish, take a strand a wrap it around the band, tucking it into the base.

TIP: This is a go-to classic look when you really need to look pulled-together and somewhat conservative (big business meeting, meeting the future in-laws, etc.)

2) The Side-Pony:
Cardinal rule of the low ponytail: keep it low!  None of your friends want to eat lunch with the girl who looks like she walked straight out of the 80's.
Using your fingers, gently gather hair to the side nape of your neck and secure.  You can pull the band loose and tease hair for a more effortless but chic look.

TIP: This is a romantic style that is perfect for weekend wear or to shake-up your casual Friday look!

3) High-Pony:
One of my favorites for when I work out!  This look is like an instant face-lift...giving you the cheekbones you never knew you had.  Just be sure not to go too high.

TIP: This look adds a youthful edge...so wear to the beach or going out with girlfriends.

4) The Big Tail:
A recent runway favorite, this style screams sexy + drama + classic!  The beauty of this look is that it appears as though you didn't try too hard...which we all know is the most gorgeous look of all!   Just make any of the above ponytails and then tease using a rattail comb working from the ends on up.  I like to add definition with a curling iron and then tease and separate to create a big, sexy look.

TIP: Consider rocking this look on date night.  A mini-skirt + long sleeves + sexy heels + a big, teased ponytail = he'll be smiling!

A few things to consider when doing your next ponytail:
- pull a few strands of hair out near the face to frame and add a little interest
- add a little extra va-va-voom by lifting slightly at the crown of your ponytail
- In a hurry?  Throw on a headband + ponytail and go!

Remember ladies...you don't wear the same shoes everyday, so you shouldn't wear the same ponytail.  Exercise your options :-)

So which is your favorite?  Do you wear one of these styles often?

Did I make the right choice?

Happy Day After Thanksgiving Everyone!

So do you ever have to choose between two items and then spend the next couple days wondering if you made the right choice?  I am kinda in that space right now.  And I feel a little lame admitting it because these are not high-ticket price items, however I didn't want to buy both so I had to make a choice.

So here are the two options:

 Express Lurex Plaid Ruffle Shirt
On Sale for $29.94 right now
Purchase HERE

Express Plaid Ruffle Shirt
On Sale for $29.94 right now
Purchase HERE

Which would YOU choose??

Both my husband and the shopping assistant at Express talked me into the red and pink shirt.  I think I was sold when me husband told me that I needed to add more color to my closet.  Ugh.  He's right.  I am addicted to black and gray.

That said, with my natural coloring, I keep thinking the dark blue and silver would have looked better.

So here I am in all my red and pink glory:

Watch - Michael Kors (purchase HERE)
Belt and Earrings - Forever 21
Necklace - vintage
Purse - old purchase at Target
Jeans - Jolt (purchase HERE)
Shoes - DSW

So what do you think?  Did I make the right choice?

A Note of Thanksgiving

Even doggies are grateful for things.
Today, Bogey is obviously very thankful for his friend horse. :-)

On this Thanksgiving Day, I awoke with so many thoughts of things and people for which I am thankful.  I am blessed in many ways...

So just a few of my thoughts this morning before I take my place in the kitchen :-)
Today, I am thankful for:
-  my health and the health of those I love
- my best friend / life partner / husband
- this beautiful and free country which I am proud to call home
- all the men and women of our country's military and who risk their life every day on behalf of this country... even on Thanksgiving
- the fact that I have hope in my life right now

I also wanted to send a note of appreciation to all of you!  Even though this blog is only a couple months old, I have met so many incredible women and learned so much from all of you.  I am grateful to have found you all.

From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU for counting me among the many blogs you visit.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Marion

Beauty Tip Tuesday: Top 3 Products to get that Warm Winter Glow!

What:
Accomplish a warm winter glow without looking like an umpa loompa
Why:
Because everyone looks better with some color! Well, except Nicole Kidman.  But she is the exception for many things.  For us average girl-next-door types, we look thinner, more tone, and even friendlier (ok, I made that part up) with a little bronze on our skin!
Where:
These tanners are to be applied at-home.
When:
ASAP!  Cause y’all know that your legs are looking a little too white right now!
Why:
To be glowing and gorgeous for your first holiday party J

I personally subscribe to the belief that everyone looks sexier with a bronze glow.  My favorite way to amp up my skin tone is to visit my local spray-tan salon.  But if I don’t have time or want to spend the money, here are my TOP 3 favorite self-tanning products:

St. Tropez Self-Tan Bronzing Mousse (4 oz for $40 or 8 oz. for $40)
Purchase here
This is a super-lightweight mousse that dries quickly (60 seconds are so) and is so easy to use.  I apply every 5 days on both face and body and the color stays consistent, streak-free and natural (a.k.a. not orange!)  I do find that it takes multiple applications to get dark, but if you are just looking for a fabulous warm glow, look no further!  It is expensive, however a 4oz. bottle typically lasts me a little over 2 months.
Pros: Consistently beautiful for all skin tones
Cons: Some people find the scent to be overwhelming.  It doesn’t bother me, but I just thought I would mention.  Also, a little on the pricey side!

Victoria’s Secret Flawless Airbrush Instant Bronze Body Spray (4.4 oz. for $12)
Purchase here
This product is a more affordable option AND easier to apply than a cream, gel or mousse!  I have a darker natural skin tone and I get a similar sun-kissed look with this product as my girlfriend who has very fair skin.  A spray is a wonderful option if you are just starting out doing at-home self tanners as there are fewer missed areas and streaking than a liquid formula applied using your hands.
Hint: Be sure to let this product set for a few minutes before getting dressed.  I would say in 5 minutes, you should be good to go (even wearing white!)
Pros: Easy application and a beautiful warm glow.  Great price!  Victoria's Secret often has a 2 for $20 deal for these products.
Cons: You’ll need to purchase a separate tanner for the face and neck.

Xen Tan Absolute Luxe Dark Lotion (8 oz. for $56)
Purchase here
So…this one is super expensive.  But if you are serious about your tan…it probably is the best product I’ve ever tried.  Such a beautiful smell (a light cherry-vanilla scent) that you forget that it’s a tanning product and not a body lotion!
This product is my go-to for a dark but realistic warm glow when I have a special event to attend and can’t make time for a salon spray-tan.  It provides a fabulous olive-based tint (as opposed to a fake-looking orange-tint) and in just 2 light applications, I look like I just got off the plane from Belize.  I first learned about this product by asking a salesperson at Nordstrom if she just returned from vacation.  So definitely a great recommendation!
Pros: The olive undertone provides a gorgeous tan for all natural skin tones.
Cons: Expensive and the bottle doesn't seem to last me very long.

A few examples of a flawless tan:

citation (all images)

BEFORE applying a self-tanner:
-          Exfoliate
-          Shave
-          Moisturize
Also, you may decide to use a application mitt or tight-fitting gloves.  Because I am naturally darker, I’ve never had a problem with scrubbing my hands following application.  However, if you have lighter skin, you might consider guarding against dying your hands…not a good look!

Do you use self-tanners?  If so, what are your favorites?

DailyBuzz Style 9x9: Polka Dots!

Exciting news!  I was chosen to participate in the November edition of the DailyBuzz Style 9x9 Challenge.

The mission:
9 bloggers create 9 different looks in 1 day.  Each look MUST feature polka dots.

Polka dots.
It's such a versatile print.  You see them on the high-fashion runway and then again at your local Forever 21.   While shopping for this challenge, I was inspired by Mad Men + Pan Am + women of the 40's and 60's.  I sought to pull together a style that is both classic and fun.

Despite the use of rich color, I wanted the polka dots to take center stage!

These sheer tights have just the slightest hint of a polka dot print...

Bold color + polka dot print + classic look = keep accessories to a minimum

Polka dot blouse: J. Crew (purchase here)
Blue pencil skirt: Express (purchase here)Clutch: Poppie Jones (purchase here)Polka dot leggings: Ann TaylorHeels: Enzo Angiolini (similar here)

Check out the DailyBuzz to see how the 8 other bloggers styled polka dots!

So tell me, are YOU a fan of polka dots?

Casual Friday: Feeling Like Fall

Ever have a "case of the Mondays"...but it's a Friday?

Well, today was rough.  In every possible way...well...except for lunch.  I had sushi for lunch.  The world is brighter, birds sing louder and people are just plain nicer whenever I'm eating sushi :-)

But I digress!

When I dressed in the morning, I chose an orange satin top that I thought was fun for fall.  I failed to remember that I do lunch duty every day (I'm a school psychologist and I think the hour in the lunch room is a fantastic time for me to walk around and connect with kids in a different way).  Oh, and today the school culinary artist team (yes...that is what they ask to be called) was serving sloppy joes.  Good ole' sloppy joes.  Did I mention that kids love to hug me during lunch time? :-)

So if these photos look a little messy...I blame the the children.  And maybe I spilled a little soy sauce...but I still blame the children.

 Jeans - Hudson
Blouse - Frenchi
Heels - Kelly & Katie
Fishnet Tights - Victoria's Secret
Necklace and Earrings - Forever21
Any stains you may see - the children's fault :-)

I thought I'd also show my "happy" coat that I wore today.  Yellow and gray are one of my favorite color combinations for fall.
Coat - Marvin
Scarf - J.Crew
Bag - BCBG

I DID get two great comments today that made me laugh (despite the awful day!):
- Our custodian, whom I adore, shouts out to me down the hallway, "You're blouse is awesome!"  haha...what a great compliment!
- And then my principal asked me, "Are those part of your shoes?" as he points to my tights.  haha.  Men.

Hope everyone is having a fabulous start to their weekend!!  Please check back as I have some exciting announcements here VERY SOON!  :-)

So...just curious...are YOU able to wear satin where you work and not worry about grease/dirt/children's hands covered in meat sauce?
